First Component

  • This symbol usually reflects the parent organ issuing the document, or the organ to which the document is being submitted.

The five principal organs are:

A/ General Assembly
S/ Security Council
E/ Economic and Social Council
T/ Trusteeship Council
ST/ Secretariat

Examples

  • A/RES/50/221 — Resolution of the General Assembly, 50th Session, Resolution 221
  • S/RES/1019 — Resolution 1019 adopted by the Security Council


Special symbols have been established for certain bodies, eg:

CRC/ Convention on the Rights of the Child
DP/ United Nations Development Programme
TD/ United Nations Conference on Trade and Development
UNEP/ United Nations Environment Programme
AT/ United Nations Administrative Tribunal
CAT/ Convention against Torture
CEDAW/ Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women
CCPR/ International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights
ID/ United Nations Industrial Development Organization
WFC/ World Food Council
HRC/ Human Rights Council

Secondary and Tertiary Components

Documents of subsidiary organs or bodies contain the symbol for the parent body (eg 'A' for the General Assembly), followed by one of the following secondary or tertiary components:

The documents for some subsidiary organs bear a symbol consisting of the symbol of the parent body, followed by the acronym of the subsidiary organ:

Final Component

This appears as a suffix to a symbol and reflects modifications to the original text:

/Amend. Alteration of a portion of an adopted text
/Corr. Corrigendum (alternation to correct errors, revise wording or reorganize text)
/Rev. Revision (a new text that supersedes and replaces that of a previously issued document)
/Summary Summarised version
/Excerpt Re-issue of an excerpt of a document
/* Re-issuance of a document for technical reasons
