General Rule

Rule AGLC r 4 <Author>, '<Title>' (<Year>) <Volume> <Journal> <Starting Page>, <Pinpoint>.

Author

Rule AGLC r 4.1
  • Where possible, the full first name and surname of an author of an article should be included.
  • However, initials or a middle name should appear if they are commonly used to identify the author.
  • Initials should be separated by a space. The name of the author should be followed by a comma.
  • If there are two or three joint authors of an article, the names of all of the authors should be included and the names of the last two authors should be separated by 'and'.
  • If there are more than three joint authors, the name of the author listed first in the article should be included, followed by 'et al'.

Title

Rule AGLC r 4.2 The title of an article should be included within single quotation marks as it appears on the first page of the article in the journal or periodical, except that:
  • full stops should not be used in abbreviations, in accordance with the Punctuation rule;
  • capitalisation should adhere to the Capitalisation rule;
  • italicisation should adhere to the Italicisation rule; and
  • a subtitle may be preceded by a colon or em-dash if it is not preceded by any punctuation mark in the original.

Year

Rule AGLC r 4.3
  • If the journal or periodical in which the article appears is organised by volume number, the year in which the article was published should be included within parentheses.
  • If the journal or periodical in which the article appears is organised by year, the year in which the article was published should be included within square brackets.

Volume

Rule AGLC r 4.4 If the journal or periodical in which the article appears is organised by volume number, the number of the volume in which the article appears should be included, following the year.

Where issues within a volume of a journal or periodical are not consecutively paginated, the issue number should be included in parentheses after the volume number. Otherwise, the issue number should not be included.

Rule AGLC r 4.5
  • The full title of the journal or periodical should appear in italics.
  • Ordinarily, 'The' should not be included at the start of a journal title.

Starting Page

Rule AGLC r 4.6 The first page number of the article should appear after the title of the journal.

Pinpoint Reference

Rule AGLC r 4.7
  • A pinpoint reference should follow the starting page number and should be preceded by a comma and a space.
  • Where the pinpoint reference is to the first page of the article, the page number should be repeated.
Example Jane Swanton, 'Contributory Negligence as a Defence to Actions for Breach of Contract' (1981) 55 Australian Law Journal 278, 278.

Articles Published in Parts

Rule AGLC r 4.8
  • When citing an article that has been published in parts, a full citation should be provided for each part.
  • '(Pt #)' and a starting page number should be included in citations to each part.
  • If both parts are cited together, a semi-colon should be used to separate the parts.
Example Lord Wedderburn, 'Shareholders' Rights and the Rule in Foss v Harbottle ' (Pt 1) [1957] Cambridge Law Journal 194; Lord Wedderburn, 'Shareholders' Rights and the Rule in Foss v Harbottle ' (Pt 2) [1958] Cambridge Law Journal 93.

Articles Published in Electronic Journals

Rule AGLC r 4.9
  • Articles appearing in journals or periodicals that are only available on the internet should include the uniform resource locator ('URL') for the article within the symbols '< >'.
  • The date on which the article was retrieved should be included and should be preceded by 'at'.
  • If the journal or periodical uses volume or issue numbers, these should also be included.
  • Pinpoint references should appear before the before the URL.
  • If the article has numbered paragraphs, a pinpoint reference may be to a paragraph. Paragraph numbers should be enclosed within square brackets.

Proceedings of the American Society of International Law

Rule <Author>, ‘<Full Title>’ (<Year>) American Society of International Law: Proceedings of the <Ordinal number> Annual Meeting <Starting Page>, <Pinpoint>.
  • The title should include ‘Remarks by’ if this is included on the first page of the article.


American Society of International Law Online ('ASIL Online')

Rule ASIL documents sourced from the internet should be cited in the following form:

<Author>, <'Title of Article / Piece'> <(full date>) American Society of International Law <Particular Area> <URL> at <date>.

Note: The 'Particular Areas' can include, for example, the following:

  • Proceedings
  • Insights
  • Commentary

If it is not held at Melbourne: • search the full-text journal databases, eg Lexis and Westlaw (link from LRC ‘Popular Databases’ page; see below); and • check other library catalogues via Coolcat (link from Melbourne University Library Catalogue homepage).

If you have found the journal but can’t find the article, check the contents page of that journal and also the years before and after.
